Brighton vs Arsenal: 13 goals scored against one conceded

Brighton vs Arsenal at the American Express Stadium on Saturday afternoon puts the Premier League’s most productive attack against its meanest defence. Brighton have scored thirteen league goals in four matches, three more than anyone else. Arsenal have conceded one, and they have won all four of their league matches to sit top of the table on goal difference. Brighton are fifth on seven points, and a home win would take them within two points of the leaders.

Arsenal arrive having also won their Champions League opener, 1-0 away to Napoli on 9 September. Brighton arrive having just won 5-0 at Coventry City.

Brighton: the ball, the shots and the goals

Brighton have averaged 70.9% of the ball in the league, the highest share in the division. They have taken seventy-eight shots, the second-highest total behind Manchester United, and put twenty-four on target, joint-most in the league. They beat Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening weekend, lost a wild match 4-3 at Chelsea, drew 1-1 at home to Leeds United and then scored five at Coventry last Sunday.

The goals come from everywhere. Eight different Brighton players have scored in the league, plus two own goals by opponents: Jack Hinshelwood, Malick Yalcouyé and Pascal Gross have two each, and Maxim De Cuyper, Luka Vuskovic, Charalampos Kostoulas, Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari one each. Gross added two assists at Coventry. Brighton have also scored three of their goals from the eightieth minute onwards.

Arsenal: nothing given away

Arsenal’s league record is four wins, eight goals scored and one conceded. They beat Coventry 3-0, won 1-0 at Aston Villa, came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 and won 2-0 at Sunderland last Saturday, when David Raya saved Enzo Le Fée’s penalty at 0-0 and Bruno Guimarães scored two minutes later. Bukayo Saka has three league goals, Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard two each.

The defensive numbers are the headline. Arsenal’s opponents have taken thirty-six league shots against them, the fewest in the division, and put nine on target, also the fewest. Three of their four league matches have ended with a clean sheet, including both away from home. The only goal they have conceded was Morgan Rogers’s strike for Chelsea in the second minute at the Emirates.

What the match turns on

Brighton have not yet faced a league defence that concedes this little, and Arsenal have not yet faced a side that keeps the ball for seventy per cent of a match. One of those numbers will have to move.

Arsenal have had more of the ball than their opponents in all four league matches, but never as much as Brighton usually take: their highest share was 64.5%, against Coventry. If Brighton dominate possession again, the match becomes a test of whether Arsenal can defend for long spells and still create enough from fewer attacks.

Home and away records point the same way. Brighton’s two home league matches produced a 4-0 win over Aston Villa and a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, in which they had twenty shots to Leeds’ ten. Arsenal have won both of their away league matches, 1-0 at Villa Park and 2-0 at Sunderland, without conceding.

Brighton’s own record also contains a warning. The one side that beat them in the league, Chelsea, did it with 25.6% of the ball and seventeen shots, and Brighton have fallen behind twice this season, against Chelsea and Leeds, both times inside the first quarter of an hour. A side with Arsenal’s finishing that scores first could make Brighton’s possession count for less than usual.

Both have Carabao Cup ties first: Arsenal at Ipswich Town on Tuesday 15 September, and Brighton at Manchester United on Wednesday 16 September. Kick-off at the Amex is 15:00 on Saturday.
