Canada at the 2026 World Cup: from nothing to the last 16

Until 12 June 2026, Canada had played six World Cup matches spread across thirty-six years and had never taken a single point. They had scored one goal in total. Twenty-three days later they walked out of a stadium in Houston eliminated in the round of 16, with two wins, a draw and eight goals scored.

Mexico 1986: three games, no goals

Canada arrived at their first World Cup as 1985 Concacaf champions and left Mexico with the barest record possible. They lost 1-0 to France in León to a Jean-Pierre Papin goal in the 79th minute, went down 2-0 to Hungary in Irapuato and closed with another 2-0 against the Soviet Union at the same ground. Bottom of the group, no points, no goals scored, five conceded.

Then came thirty-six years away. At Qatar 2022 they lost all three again, but took something home: against Croatia, after sixty-seven seconds, Alphonso Davies headed in a Tajon Buchanan cross for the first goal in Canada's World Cup history. Four days earlier he had missed a penalty against Belgium, saved by Thibaut Courtois.

The first point, in Toronto

Group B in 2026 was played at home. Canada opened at BMO Field in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina, in front of 43,002, and fell behind to Lukić in the 21st minute. In the 78th, Cyle Larin bundled in a Promise David cross for the first point in Canadian World Cup history.

It is worth pausing on who supplied that assist. Promise David, born in Brampton and raised through the Toronto FC academy, was playing in 2024 for Nõmme Kalju in Estonia, where he scored fourteen goals in sixteen games. From there he joined Union Saint-Gilloise, scored nineteen and helped them win Belgium's first league title in ninety years. He came off the bench in Toronto and made the goal.

The 6-0 that changed everything

On 18 June, at BC Place in Vancouver in front of 52,497, came the first win: 6-0 against Qatar. Larin opened in the 16th minute, Jonathan David scored three — 29, 45+3 and 90+2 — Nathan Saliba added one in the 64th and Mohamed Manai turned into his own net in the 75th.

But that match also produced an image that explains the team better than the scoreline does. In the 51st minute Ismaël Koné broke his tibia and fibula in a tackle and had surgery the next day. Thirteen minutes later Saliba — the player who had replaced him — curled in a free kick, ran to the crowd and held up Koné's empty number 8 shirt.

On 24 June, again in Vancouver, Switzerland won 2-1 through Vargas and Manzambi; Promise David pulled one back in the 76th. Canada went through in second, level on four points with Bosnia and separated by goal difference: +5 against −1. Which means the thrashing of Qatar is literally what put them into the next round.

Winning away because they finished second

Second place carried a cost: instead of playing the round of 32 at BC Place, Canada travelled to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. There, in front of 69,237, Stephen Eustáquio — born in Leamington, Ontario, to Portuguese parents, and captain that night with Davies unfit — drove in a shot from the edge of the box in the 92nd minute to beat South Africa 1-0. Canada's first knockout win at a World Cup.

On 4 July, in Houston, it ended. Canada held out through a goalless first half in which they threatened more than Morocco did and Bounou saved twice from close range, then were undone on the counter: Ounahi scored in the 50th and the 82nd, and Rahimi completed the 3-0 in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

"Six matches and one goal in thirty-six years; five matches and eight goals in twenty-three days. That is exactly the leap Canada made in 2026."

The team that did this did not come from nowhere. Jonathan David, who scored all three against Qatar, is Canada's all-time leading scorer and has played for Juventus since July 2025, after five seasons at Lille. Alphonso Davies, the captain and Bayern full-back, arrived at the tournament having torn a cruciate ligament in March 2025 and suffered a muscle injury in May 2026, and those two injuries left him on the bench throughout. Alistair Johnston plays for Celtic, Tajon Buchanan for Villarreal and Dayne St. Clair keeps goal for Inter Miami. It is the best generation the country has had, and a home World Cup landed on top of it.

Jesse Marsch, who signed an extension through 2030 barely two and a half weeks before the opening match, closed the tournament having taken charge of thirty-seven games. Canada sat thirtieth in the FIFA ranking of July 2026.
