Nine English clubs in Europe in 2026/27: who and how

England has nine clubs in the 2026/27 European competitions. Eight already have a place in a league phase; the ninth still has to earn one in August.

Five in the Champions League

Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa qualify through the Premier League's top four. The fifth is Liverpool, via the extra place UEFA awards each year to the two associations with the best European performance the previous season. It is a place that has to be won again every year rather than inherited: England held one for 2025/26 and has now earned another.

All five enter the league phase directly; no English club plays Champions League qualifying. Aston Villa also won the Europa League, but that gave England no extra place: they had already qualified through fourth.

Three in the Europa League, and a cascade that reached eighth

This is where the mechanics are worth spelling out, because they are often explained badly.

• Bournemouth qualify through sixth place. It is the first European qualification in the club's history and their highest ever finish.
• Sunderland are in because the FA Cup winners' place cascaded down the table: City were already in the Champions League. It is their first European campaign since 1973, in their first season back in the top flight.
• Crystal Palace enter as Conference League winners. And note the detail: the Conference League winner is promoted to the Europa League, so they cannot defend their title.
• Brighton inherit the League Cup winners' place, which cascaded for the same reason as far as eighth.

Put another way: Manchester City's cup double pushed European qualification one place further down the table than it would otherwise have reached. Without that double, Brighton would have nothing.

The ninth is not in yet

Brighton do not go straight into the Conference League phase: they must come through a two-legged play-off round, with the ties on 20 and 27 August and the draw on 3 August. Lose it and their European season ends without a single league-phase match.

How the Champions League works this year

The format is unchanged from last season: 36 clubs, eight matches each — four home and four away — against opponents drawn from four pots. The top eight go straight to the last 16, and ninth to twenty-fourth contest a two-legged knockout play-off.

The league-phase draw is on 27 August 2026 and the first matchday falls between 8 and 10 September, a week earlier than last year. The final is on Saturday 5 June 2027 at the Metropolitano in Madrid. The Europa League final is on 26 May in Frankfurt and the Conference League final on 2 June in Istanbul.

Where England is coming from

Last season delivered two trophies. Aston Villa won the Europa League on 20 May at Beşiktaş's stadium in Istanbul, beating Freiburg 3-0 in front of 37,324, with goals from Youri Tielemans in the 41st minute, Emiliano Buendía in the third minute of first-half stoppage time and Morgan Rogers in the 58th: their first major trophy in thirty years and their first European title since the 1982 European Cup.

Crystal Palace won the Conference League on 27 May at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, beating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 through Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 51st minute in front of 39,176. It was the first European trophy in their history, and both finalists were reaching a first continental final.

And Arsenal lost the Champions League final to PSG on penalties, on 30 May at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. A year earlier, in 2024/25, Tottenham had beaten Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao and Chelsea had won the Conference League against Real Betis in Wrocław.

It is worth understanding what each of them is actually playing for beyond prestige. Reaching the Champions League phase guarantees eight matches and revenue the other two competitions cannot approach, and finishing in the top eight saves an entire knockout round in February — precisely the month in which half a domestic season is decided. That is why the 36-team format rewards autumn consistency so heavily: qualifying is not enough, you have to qualify high. And it is why Brighton's August play-off matters far more than the name of their competition suggests.

The season's first continental match comes before any of this: Aston Villa face PSG in the UEFA Super Cup on 12 August at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, the first time Austria has staged the fixture.
