PSG Win the 2026 Champions League on Penalties vs Arsenal

Fut Simulator Pro·30 May 2026

Paris Saint-Germain are, for the second year in a row, champions of the Champions League. In a dramatic final played on 30 May 2026 at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, the Parisians beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties, after a 1-1 that survived 90 minutes and extra time. Kai Havertz had put the Gunners ahead very early, but Ousmane Dembélé levelled from the penalty spot. In the shootout, a missed kick from Gabriel Magalhães crowned PSG and handed Luis Enrique his third Champions League as a manager. The Parisian project touches the summit of Europe once more.

A Nerve-Shredding Final in Budapest

It was a clash of extremes. Arsenal, freshly crowned Premier League champions and dreaming of the double, gave up the ball and dropped deep: they finished with just 26% possession, the lowest figure recorded by a Champions League finalist since data began in 2004. PSG, the reigning champions, monopolised the ball but ran again and again into a colossal David Raya. For 120 minutes the script was the same: Parisian dominance, English resistance and a 1-1 that refused to break.

Havertz Strikes First, Dembélé Equalises from the Spot

Arsenal landed the first blow, and early. In the 5th minute, Kai Havertz pounced inside the box and beat Matvey Safonov to make it 0-1 and silence much of Budapest. The goal forced PSG to chase the game for over an hour. The reward came in the 64th minute: Cristhian Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot. From twelve yards, Ousmane Dembélé made no mistake and struck the 1-1 that reignited the champions.

120 Minutes Without a Winner

With the equaliser, PSG pushed for the kill, but the English wall held. David Raya grew with every Parisian arrival and propped up an Arsenal that bet everything on resistance. Extra time did not move the scoreline: thirty more minutes of siege without reward. With the 1-1 unmoved after 120 minutes, the biggest final of the year went to the lottery of penalties, the stage where PSG had already learned to suffer and to win.

The Shootout: PSG 4-3

The finish was nerve-shredding. Gonçalo Ramos opened with authority for PSG and Viktor Gyökeres replied by sending Safonov the wrong way. Désiré Doué scored the second for PSG and, at the hottest moment, Eberechi Eze dragged his wide. Hakimi and Beraldo did not miss; Rice and Martinelli kept Arsenal alive. David Raya even saved the fifth from Nuno Mendes, but Gabriel Magalhães smashed the last one over the crossbar and sealed the 4-3 that sparked the Parisian party in Budapest.

PSG's Back-to-Back

With this win, PSG become only the second club to successfully defend the Champions League in the modern era of the tournament, after the Real Madrid side that won three in a row between 2016 and 2018. After the 5-0 thrashing of Internazionale in the 2025 final, Luis Enrique's team confirm their reign was no accident, but the start of an era. The Asturian coach, who had already conquered Europe with Barcelona in 2015, adds another European Cup to a legendary career and makes it clear that this PSG is no longer measured by what it spends, but by what it wins.

Arsenal, One Step from the Double

For Arsenal, there is the bitter taste of having been so close. Arteta's men reached Budapest as Premier League champions, dreaming of a historic double, but they leave with their second lost European final after Paris 2006 against Barcelona. The difference with that team is that this Arsenal was no surprise: they competed as equals, deserved more and fell a single penalty short of glory. The first European title in their history will have to wait, but the feeling is that this generation will get its chance again.

"Finals are not always won by the side that plays best, but by the one that endures best. PSG endured, suffered and knew how to wait for their moment from twelve yards. Arsenal leave with their heads held high, but football does not hand out prizes for merit: it hands out trophies on penalties."
