Arsenal open title defence with 3-0 win over Coventry

Arsenal began the defence of their title exactly as they had finished the last campaign: in charge. They beat Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates in front of 60,098 supporters, Kai Havertz striking on 15 minutes, Bukayo Saka on 23 and Martin Ødegaard moments after the restart, on 49. It was the opening fixture of the 2026-27 Premier League season and the champions' second successive 3-0 win in six days.

Before this, Arsenal had already lifted the Community Shield with a 3-0 win over Manchester City in Cardiff, Riccardo Calafiori scoring after twenty-four seconds. Havertz and Ødegaard were on the scoresheet in both games. For a club that had just ended a twenty-two-year wait, the manner of the start mattered almost as much as the result.

Mikel Arteta set up in a 4-2-3-1: Raya in goal; Ben White, Gabriel, Cristhian Mosquera and Calafiori across the back; Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly in front of them; Saka, Ødegaard and Tzolis behind Havertz. Coventry answered with a 4-1-4-1, Carl Rushworth between the posts and Ellis Simms alone up top.

Tzolis, the name on everyone's lips

The Greek winger, signed from Club Brugge after a season of 17 goals and 23 assists in Belgium, marked his first appearance in English football by involving himself in the opening two moments of the game: the turnover that led to Havertz's goal and the cross for Saka's. He was withdrawn in the second half to a standing ovation.

Arteta did not hold back. He said he adores the player, that his performances in recent matches have been phenomenal and that he has a huge variety of tools in the final third. Ødegaard put it another way: he is so sharp that he is difficult to defend against. The captain summed the night up in three words, the perfect start, though on his own goal he admitted with a smile that it was not the cleanest of finishes and that he was simply in the right place.

A makeshift back line that was never troubled

Gabriel and Mosquera paired up at centre-back out of necessity. William Saliba is nursing a back problem that will keep him out until the winter, and Jurriën Timber has yet to return to training with the group because of a groin issue. They were the side's only two absentees: Saka and Rice both came through their fitness tests in time.

Bruno Guimarães did not start either. The £75m signing from Newcastle arrived with a doubt over a slight knock picked up in the Community Shield. And there was one absence that had nothing to do with fitness: Ezri Konsa, brought in from Aston Villa, could not play because the club failed to complete his registration in time. His debut is on hold, and the fixture list has served up an irony: on 31 August Arsenal travel to Villa Park.

Arteta demanded a third at half-time

The manager revealed that in the dressing room he talked not about seeing the game out but about extending the lead. At 2-0 he asked for the third, because in the Premier League that scoreline is never comfortable. Afterwards he praised the clarity, the understanding and the fluency of his team, said they were really dominant with the ball and added that they should have scored more.

On what changes when you are defending a title, he was explicit: what they show is more hunger and the will to be better than anyone. And he shut down the transfer question by saying he is very happy with his squad, that they already have plenty of top players.

Coventry back after twenty-five years

There was a very different story on the other side. Coventry City are back in the top flight a quarter of a century on: their last season in the elite was 2000-01, and before that relegation they had strung together thirty-four consecutive campaigns at the top. They were also one of the twenty-two founder members of the Premier League in 1992.

The road back was mapped out by Frank Lampard, who arrived in November 2024 with the side seventeenth in the Championship and took them up as champions, with 97 goals in 46 matches, at least fifteen more than any rival, and seven different players in double figures for goals and assists.

Lampard: they played like champions

The manager was not looking for excuses. He said it was obviously a huge challenge, that Arsenal are a fantastic side and that it was a good lesson for his players to see the levels at the top. The line that summed up the afternoon was blunt: they played like champions.

He also asked for patience with his own players. He warned that not every game will look like this one, that Arsenal will beat plenty of teams on that pitch, and that his squad deserved better. Before he left he offered the perspective that explains where his club stands: a few years ago Coventry were in League Two and playing at a different ground; when he walked in they were seventeenth in the second tier; the lads have grown, the team has grown and the connection with the supporters has been incredible.
