Brentford 3-0 Tottenham: De Zerbi's bitter London bow

Brentford thrashed Tottenham 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium in front of 17,180 supporters. Keane Lewis-Potter scored on 12 minutes, Vitaly Janelt on 33 and Kayode on 49. The scoreline was, if anything, kind: the hosts racked up 3.96 expected goals, their highest figure since January 2025.

Seven different Brentford players hit the target. Only two Tottenham players troubled Kelleher at all. And for good measure, Igor Thiago smashed a penalty against the post after substitute Rodrigo Bentancur, barely on the pitch, fouled Kevin Schade.

Sangare: club record fee and an assist on debut

Mamadou Sangare signed for Brentford on 1 August 2026 from Lens for around £39m, a club record, on a five-year contract with the option of a sixth until 2032. A twenty-four-year-old Malian, he came in to fill the hole left by Jordan Henderson.

His recent CV explains the outlay: runner-up in Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France with Lens, French league Team of the Season and winner of the 2026 Marc-Vivien Foé Award as the competition's best African player. Keith Andrews said he was someone they had been tracking for a long time, that he was on their radar and that they were desperate to bring him in.

The debut could hardly have gone better: he set up the opener and his volley led to the third. He became the fifth player to score or assist on his Premier League bow for Brentford.

Andrews, second season and continuity

Brentford's manager went from set-piece coach to the top job in June 2025, after Thomas Frank left for Tottenham. He has signed on until 2032 and begins his second full campaign after finishing ninth last time out, matching the club's best ever Premier League placing.

Why this 3-0 stings so much at Tottenham

You have to remember where this team has come from. Thomas Frank was sacked on 11 February 2026 with the side sixteenth, after eight league games without a win in 2026. Igor Tudor replaced him on an interim basis and lasted forty-four days and seven matches: he was dismissed after a 0-3 home defeat by Nottingham Forest.

Roberto De Zerbi inherited a team lying seventeenth, a point above the relegation zone and with seven matches to play. On 10 April Tottenham actually dropped into the bottom three, something that had not happened since January 2009. They finished seventeenth on 41 points.

The Italian signed on 31 March 2026 on a five-year contract, and this is his first full season. The coincidence is cruel: the scoreline that cost his predecessor the job is exactly the one he has just shipped on the opening weekend.

Two hundred million on two midfielders

Tottenham have not held back. Sandro Tonali cost an initial £92.5m, rising to £100m in add-ons, and is the club's outright record. Mateus Fernandes arrived for £85m after being relegated with West Ham, wearing the number 18; his fee had already broken the previous record, £20m more than Solanke's, before Tonali left it behind.

Fernandes did not even start: he came on in the second half and did little to answer his critics on his first appearance.

Seven absentees and a twenty-year-old captain

The injury list explains part of what unfolded. Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and Pape Matar Sarr were all carrying knocks. Longer-term absentees included Dejan Kulusevski, who missed the entire pre-season with his knee, Wilson Odobert, Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus. Guglielmo Vicario was injured too, hence Kinsky's start, and Cristian Romero was on the list as well.

With that picture, the armband ended up on a very young arm. Archie Gray became the youngest player to start as Tottenham captain in the Premier League, at twenty years and one hundred and sixty-three days.

The one positive note of the night came from the bench: James Maddison played again after spending the whole of last season injured.

De Zerbi: we did not play well, we did not fight well

The manager was hard on himself and on his team. He accepted that they suffered against their opponents' physicality, that they knew about it before kick-off and still were not ready to fight for the duels, and that they were not in the right positions to press high.

His verdict on the first half was damning: if you analyse the game, you see how many duels they lost before the break, and the match went in Brentford's direction. Even so, he refused to turn a defeat into a crisis: he said he believes in his players, that he has not lost faith in them as people either and that they cannot tear everything down because they are working well. He closed by repeating the same idea twice, that they have to work, improve and analyse the game better.
