Champions League 2026-27 Knockout Phase: Format and Dates

The league phase looks like a table and works as a sieve. On 27 January, when all eighteen matches of the last round kick off at the same time, the 36 clubs will be split into three groups that have nothing in common: eight that can rest until March, sixteen that have to play in February, and twelve whose European season ends there, with no parachute into the Europa League.

The three zones of the table

The rule itself is short and leaves nothing open. What changes from one position to the next is anything but small.

• Positions 1 to 8: straight into the round of 16, and seeded in its draw.
• Positions 9 to 24: a two-legged knockout play-off in February.
• Positions 25 to 36: out of Europe altogether. There is no consolation prize.

The border nobody talks about is the one at the top. Finishing eighth instead of ninth means two fewer matches, two weeks off in midwinter and, if you go through, an opponent who has just played those two matches. Both times this format has been run, it has cost exactly one point.

Sixteen points buys the rest

In the 2024-25 league phase eighth place went to Aston Villa on 16 points and ninth to Atalanta on 15. In 2025-26 eighth was Manchester City, again on 16, and ninth Real Madrid, again on 15. Two seasons, the same cut, the same margin: one point between a February off and two more ties.

At the top the bar moves around far more: first place took 21 points in the first edition and 24 in the second. At the bottom the European cut has been crueller still. Both times the 24th and 25th teams finished level on points, 11 in 2024-25 and 9 in 2025-26, and goal difference decided who stayed alive and who went home.

The play-off: seeds and two legs

The sixteen clubs in the middle are split in half by where they finished. Ninth to sixteenth are seeded; seventeenth to twenty-fourth are not. A seed can only be drawn against a non-seed, and it plays the second leg at home, which is the smaller reward for finishing higher.

The draw is made in Nyon on 29 January, two days after the league phase closes, and the ties are played on 16 and 17 and 23 and 24 February. The eight survivors join the eight clubs that were already waiting.

What this draw no longer protects is nationality. Since the format changed, two clubs from the same country can be paired from the play-off round onwards, instead of being kept apart until the quarter-finals as they once were. That is how Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid came to meet in the round of 16 in the very first season of it, a tie that was settled on penalties at the Metropolitano.

The bracket is written before the draw

This is the part that confuses people every February. The draw is not free: UEFA starts from a predetermined bracket split into four sections, and inside each section a seeded team can only meet one of two possible opponents. That is why, the moment the round of 16 is drawn, the quarter-final and semi-final pairings are already known.

The round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final are all drawn in one go on 26 February. From that day until June, anyone can trace a club’s entire possible route to the final without waiting for another ball to come out of a bowl.

• Final league phase matchday: 27 January 2027, all eighteen games at the same time.
• Play-off draw: 29 January, in Nyon.
• Knockout phase play-offs: 16 and 17, 23 and 24 February.
• Draw for the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final: 26 February.
• Round of 16: 9 and 10, 16 and 17 March. Quarter-finals: 6 and 7, 13 and 14 April.
• Semi-finals: 27 and 28 April, 4 and 5 May. Final: Saturday 5 June 2027 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.
