Coventry 0-5 Brighton: Pascal Gross scores one, makes two
Coventry City 0-5 Brighton was the heaviest defeat of the Premier League season so far, and for half an hour it looked like a very different match. Coventry had three shots saved by Bart Verbruggen before Brighton scored at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Sunday. Then Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring, Malick Yalcouyé added a second, Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off, and Brighton scored three more.
Pascal Gross had a hand in three of the goals: an assist for the first, the penalty for the third and the assist for the fifth. Coventry are still without a goal and without a point after four league matches, and their goal difference is now minus ten.
Three early saves from Verbruggen
Coventry forced three saves in the first half-hour. Verbruggen kept out Ephron Mason-Clark on twenty-one minutes, from Jack Rudoni on twenty-seven and from Frank Onyeka on thirty-two. Carl Rushworth, at the other end, had already saved from Yalcouyé on eighteen.
Brighton scored on thirty-five minutes. Gross played a headed pass to Kostoulas, who volleyed right-footed from the right side of the box into the bottom left corner. Verbruggen saved from Mason-Clark again a minute into the second half.
Yalcouyé, Awoniyi and the collapse
On fifty-one minutes Maxim De Cuyper set up Yalcouyé in the centre of the box and he finished right-footed into the bottom left corner. Two minutes later Awoniyi was shown a red card for violent conduct, and Coventry had to play the rest of the match with ten men.
The third goal arrived on seventy minutes. Bobby Thomas fouled Kostoulas in the area, and Gross converted the penalty right-footed into the bottom right corner. Lewis Dunk added a fourth on eighty-three minutes with a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top left corner, set up by the substitute Chema Andrés, and Yasin Ayari scored the fifth in stoppage time, again from outside the box, from a Gross pass.
Coventry kept going. Brandon Thomas-Asante, on as a substitute, forced two saves from Verbruggen, one on seventy-eight minutes and one in stoppage time. By the end they had fourteen shots and six on target, and Verbruggen had saved all six.

No goals, no points, minus ten
Coventry’s league season now reads: a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal, a 1-0 home defeat by Hull City, a 1-0 defeat at Manchester City and this. They have not scored in four matches, and two of the three before Sunday had at least been close, both 1-0.
The shots are there. They had twelve at the Etihad with 22.4% of the ball and fourteen here, six on target. What they have not had is a finish, and the red card removed any chance of a response on Sunday. Coventry are twentieth, and along with Tottenham they are one of only two clubs yet to score in the league this season.
Brighton’s first away league points
For Brighton it was a first away league win of the season, and their first away league points: their only previous league trip had ended in a 4-3 defeat at Chelsea. Seven points from four matches, thirteen goals scored and five conceded, leaves them fifth.
Thirteen goals is the highest total in the division. It includes a 4-0 win over Aston Villa on the opening weekend and this 5-0, and it comes from a spread of scorers rather than a single striker: five different Brighton players scored on Sunday alone.
Brighton’s next assignment is a Carabao Cup third-round tie at Manchester United on Wednesday. Coventry host Aston Villa in the same round on the same night. The cup has at least produced goals for them: they won 4-2 at Plymouth Argyle in the second round.
