Leeds vs Brentford: nine goals and two clean sheets in a week

Leeds United host Brentford at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, and both sides arrive on the back of the best week either could have asked for.

Between them they have played four matches since the season began and won all four, scoring twelve and conceding one. The last two league meetings between them finished 0-0 and 1-1.

Leeds have beaten the same side twice, away, in four days

Leeds won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend — the only away win of the round apart from Chelsea's at Fulham — and then returned to the City Ground on Tuesday and won 2-0 in the League Cup, through Daniel James on 50 minutes and James Justin on 75.

Two wins at the same away ground inside four days, both without conceding, is an unusual way to start a season. It also means Leeds have played 180 minutes at the City Ground this season and not let Forest score.

The caveat is the effort involved. Leeds have played twice this week and Brentford have too, so neither can claim the advantage, but Leeds have done their travelling.

Brentford have scored nine in two

Brentford beat Tottenham 3-0 at the Gtech on the opening weekend and then won 6-1 at Birmingham City in the cup on Tuesday. Callum Wilson scored on 6, Aaron Hickey on 35, Nathan Collins on 40 and again on 77, Mikkel Damsgaard on 70 and Igor Thiago on 73, with Demarai Gray scoring Birmingham's goal on 28.

Nine goals in two matches, six of them away from home, is the sort of week that sets a tone. Collins scoring twice from defence is the kind of detail that suggests set pieces are working as well as open play.

The obvious qualification is the opposition. Birmingham are two divisions below and the scoreline reflects it. Tottenham are not, and 3-0 against them is the result that carries into Sunday.

A fixture that has been resolutely tight

The last five meetings tell a completely different story from the current form of either side. Leeds and Brentford drew 0-0 at Elland Road in March 2026 and 1-1 at the Gtech in December 2025. Before that they drew 0-0 at Elland Road in January 2023.

The two that were not draws were emphatic in opposite directions: Brentford won 5-2 at home in September 2022 and Leeds won 2-1 there in May 2022.

Three draws in five, two of them goalless, against two teams currently averaging six goals a match between them. Something has to give, and the odds — Leeds at around +150, which makes them slight underdogs at home — suggest the market is not sure which way.

What each is trying to prove

Leeds are ninth on three points, having won their opener 1-0. It was the narrowest victory of the round and the only one by a single goal without a reply, which is a particular kind of efficiency: they created enough and gave away nothing.

Brentford are third with a plus-three difference. Beating Tottenham by three was the second-biggest margin of the weekend behind Brighton's four.

For Leeds, the test is whether the defensive record survives contact with a side that has scored nine in a week. For Brentford, it is whether the goals arrive against a team that has not conceded in 180 minutes.

The wider picture

Six points from two matches would put either side in a small group at the top of the table before the international break arrives, and would do it having beaten a direct rival for the same part of the table.

It is also, for both, a chance to show the opening weekend was not a one-off. Leeds went to a difficult away ground and won; Brentford took apart a side with far greater resources. Doing something comparable this Sunday would turn a good week into a genuine start.

Where they sit and when they play

Kick-off is 14:00 BST on Sunday, one of three matches starting at the same time. Brentford are third on goal difference with a plus-three; Leeds are ninth on plus-one, the smallest winning margin of any of the seven home victories on the opening weekend.

The opening round was dominated by home sides: seven wins from ten. Leeds were one of only two teams to win away — the other being Chelsea at Fulham — which makes their 1-0 at the City Ground rarer than the scoreline suggests.

Brentford's 3-0 against Tottenham, meanwhile, was the second-largest margin of the weekend, behind only Brighton's four at the Amex. Two of the three biggest wins of the round involved a side playing at Elland Road on Sunday.
