Leeds 4-1 Newcastle: three before half-time, up to third

Leeds United 4-1 Newcastle United closed the fourth round of the Premier League season on Monday night, and it closed it with Leeds’ biggest league win of the season. Leeds were three goals up by half-time, all three arriving from the thirty-second minute onwards, went four up before the hour and finished the night third in the table, unbeaten in the league after four matches. Newcastle, who had not lost a league match before Monday, conceded as many goals in one evening as they had in their first three matches together.

The possession was almost even: Leeds had 50.7% of the ball. They also had fifteen shots to Newcastle’s seven. Newcastle put five of their seven on target and hit the bar, and James Trafford made four saves. But Leeds scored four, one more than their league total from the first three weeks of the season.

Horníček holds out, then Miley’s own goal

Jayden Bogle had two efforts saved by Lukáš Horníček in the first twenty-five minutes, the first from very close range after a headed pass from James Justin, the second from the right side of the box. Newcastle, meanwhile, lost Nico González to injury after nineteen minutes, with Sean Steur coming on.

The opening goal, on thirty-two minutes, went down as an own goal by Lewis Miley. Two minutes later Leeds had a second: Dominic Calvert-Lewin set up Bogle, who headed in from the centre of the box, into the bottom right corner. It was Bogle’s second league goal of the season, after the opener at Brighton on 5 September.

Horníček kept the margin at two on thirty-eight minutes, saving from Calvert-Lewin at very close range, and at the other end Trafford saved from Harvey Barnes on forty-one. Calvert-Lewin was booked on forty-four minutes. Two minutes later he scored the third, finishing right-footed from the centre of the box into the bottom right corner after a pass from Tarik Muharemovic.

Okafor makes it four

Newcastle changed things just before the hour. After Trafford had saved from Lewis Hall on fifty-four minutes, and Jacob Murphy had been booked in the same minute, Newcastle made three substitutions in two minutes.

The fourth goal came almost immediately anyway. On fifty-nine minutes Noah Okafor finished left-footed from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner, and Leeds were 4-0 up with half an hour still to play.

Newcastle had more chances after that. Trafford saved from Barnes again on sixty-five minutes, Joe Willock hit the bar from the left side of the six-yard box on seventy-two, and Trafford saved from Willock on seventy-seven. In the ninetieth minute Tino Livramento crossed and Bazoumana Touré, one of the fifty-seventh-minute substitutes, scored left-footed from the centre of the box.

Leeds are unbeaten in the league and third

Leeds began the season with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, drew 1-1 at home to Brentford and 1-1 at Brighton, and have now won by three. Eight points from four matches, seven goals scored and three conceded, puts them third, level on points with Hull City and ahead of them on goal difference.

The contrast with the first three weeks is in the goals. Leeds had scored three league goals before Monday night. Here three of their six shots on target went in, from three different players, and a Newcastle own goal added a fourth. Calvert-Lewin, who also scored the equaliser against Brentford, had a goal and an assist, and Bogle has now scored in consecutive league matches.

Leeds rotated heavily late on, with six substitutions between the seventy-second and eighty-eighth minutes. They are no longer in the Carabao Cup, having lost 6-3 at Chelsea in the third round last week.

Newcastle’s first league defeat

Newcastle arrived unbeaten in the league, having drawn 2-2 with Liverpool, won 2-0 at Tottenham and drawn 2-2 with Bournemouth, and leave with five points. They are twelfth. Their goal difference has gone from plus two to minus one in a single evening, and they have now conceded eight goals in four matches, four of them on Monday night.

They did at least keep attacking: five of their seven shots were on target, Willock hit the bar with another, and Trafford made four saves. But the first-half spell, three goals conceded between the thirty-second minute and half-time, was decisive, and Newcastle were two goals down before they had put a single shot on target.
