NWSL 2026 Explained: Teams, Format and Playoff Race

The NWSL opened 2026 as the most ambitious season in its history: sixteen teams, two brand-new franchises, an attendance record obliterated in one of their home debuts, and a campaign split in two by the men's World Cup break. As of August 8, with the league back in action and heading into the decisive stretch, here is the real state of the top women's soccer competition in the United States.

What the NWSL is and how many teams it has

The National Women's Soccer League is the first division of American women's soccer, and 2026 is its fourteenth season. This year it grew from fourteen to sixteen clubs with the arrival of two expansion franchises: Boston Legacy FC and Denver Summit FC. Both debuted in March and both did it inside NFL buildings, Boston Legacy at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, and Denver Summit at Empower Field at Mile High, home of the Broncos.

The expansion does not stop there. In November 2025 the league awarded its seventeenth franchise to Atlanta, with Arthur Blank, owner of the Falcons and Atlanta United, fronting the project and paying a record entry fee of 165 million dollars. The team will begin play in 2028 and will use Mercedes-Benz Stadium, reconfigured to a capacity of 28,000 spectators for league matches.

The format: 30 games and an eight-team playoff

Every team plays 30 regular-season games, home and away against the other fifteen. The calendar opened between March 13 and 15 and finishes on November 1, with a pause for the men's World Cup from June 15 to 28; play resumed on July 3. After that come the playoffs, which hand the title to one of the eight best-placed clubs.

There are two distinct trophies and they are easy to mix up. The NWSL Shield goes to the team with the best regular-season record, European style. The NWSL Championship is settled in the November final, American style. On top of that, the Challenge Cup was played on June 26, the match that pits the reigning title winner against the previous season's Shield winner.

The reigning champion: Gotham FC

The 2025 title went to Gotham FC, the New Jersey club, which won the final 1-0 against the Washington Spirit on November 22 at PayPal Park in San Jose. Rose Lavelle scored in the 80th minute. It was the club's second championship in three seasons, a pace very few teams have sustained in this league.

It was also the most improbable coronation the competition has seen: Gotham entered the playoffs as the eighth and final seed and became the lowest seed ever to win the NWSL Championship. That precedent is the best argument for understanding why a format that puts half the league into the postseason turns out so unpredictable every November.

Where the 2026 season stands right now

In early August, Gotham FC is back on top of the table, with the Washington Spirit right behind and the Utah Royals rounding out the provisional podium. Individually, Zambia's Barbra Banda of the Orlando Pride leads the Golden Boot race with 12 goals. Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger has the most clean sheets with nine, and Brazil's Pietra Tordin of the Portland Thorns tops the assist chart with eight.

The star power grew as well. Trinity Rodman signed the most expensive renewal in league history with the Washington Spirit in 2026: three years at roughly two million dollars per season, a contract made possible by the new high impact player rule, which lets clubs exceed the salary cap by up to one million dollars per player. Sophia Wilson exercised a one-million-dollar option to stay with the Portland Thorns, and Lindsey Heaps returned to the NWSL by signing with Denver Summit.

Crowds, television and money

The most striking number of the year arrived on March 28: Denver Summit's home debut against the Washington Spirit drew 63,004 people to Empower Field at Mile High, an all-time NWSL record. The previous mark belonged to Bay FC, with 40,091 at Oracle Park. League-wide, 2025 closed with an average of 10,669 fans across 182 matches, 5% below the record 11,235 of 2024, but still a third straight season above 10,000. At the midpoint of 2026 the average had climbed to 11,044.

Financially, the NWSL is in the strongest position it has ever occupied. Its media rights agreement with CBS, ESPN, Prime Video and Scripps is worth 240 million dollars over four years, from 2024 through 2027, roughly 60 million per season, and it was expanded for 2026 and 2027 with more games available. Sportico valued Angel City as the league's most expensive club at 335 million dollars and put the average franchise valuation at 184 million.
